Finding God in Holy Silence with the Help of Our Guardian Angel

As summer gives way to fall, I find myself drawn to quieter ways of enjoying the majesty of the season. The changing colors, cooler air, and shorter days invite me to slow down, step away from busyness and noise of the world, and become more attentive to God through an intentional time of holy silence.
Recently, I attended a silent retreat that concluded a year of formation and my Consecration to my Guardian Angel. This retreat was a deeply meaningful experience and reminded me that God has given each of us a faithful companion to accompany us throughout our lives. Scripture beautifully captures this promise: “See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way.” (Exodus 23:20).
During the retreat, I became especially aware of both my need for, and the gift of, holy silence. Silence is not simply the absence of noise. For me, it became an opportunity to set aside my plans, hopes, worries, and distractions to simply be present with God. It was a time for my heart to become quiet enough to listen and trust where God is leading.

In this past year, I’ve learned that devotion to our Guardian Angel is never meant to draw attention away from God. Rather, our Angel helps us become more attentive to God, more receptive to His will, and more aware of His love, mercy, and the good plans He has for our lives. Our Guardian Angel can help us grow in holiness, deepen our love of the Eucharist and prayer, and serve God more faithfully.
St. Padre Pio, who had a profound devotion to the angels, wrote, “How close to us stands one of the celestial spirits, who from the cradle to the grave never leaves us for an instant.” His words remind me of the extraordinary closeness of this gift from God.
Another perspective on the importance of asking our Guardian Angel for help comes from Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, who often spoke about the angels, including his own Guardian Angel, and their mission to illuminate and protect us. His beatification on September 24 is a timely reminder of his lifelong desire to lead people closer to Christ.
